The Best Career Tips for New Grads

The Best Career Tips for New GradsThe Best Career Tips for New GradsWhile a diploma certainly enhances a new graduates resume, it doesnt guarantee that they will be readily able to find employment. Here are some tips for new graduates as they enter the job market and search for the ideal animal career opportunity. Realize that Your Degree May Only Indirectly Relate to Your Ultimate Career Path You might have achieved a degree that would logically lead to employment in one particular field, but your skills may be readily transferable to another field that offers many more job opportunities. For example, a veterinary technician diploma might lead a candidate to a position in the veterinary pharmaceutical sales arena, rather than a traditional clinic-based support role. Consider Taking a Starter Job If you can gain valuable skills and practical experience, it may be worth taking a job that isnt exactly what youre looking for but will better prepare you for the position you desir e. A commitment of one to two years may result in greatly enhanced prospects when you re-enter the job market. Just be koranvers not to develop a pattern of short-term commitments so that you wont be branded with the dreaded job hopper label. Find an Internship or Volunteer Opportunity If you cant find a position right away, consider looking for an internship or volunteer opportunity. There are many internship opportunities for those interested in zoo careers, wildlife careers, equine careers, animal nutrition careers, marine animal careers, veterinary careers, and many other fields of interest. These opportunities can be found through online searches, the career center at your educational institution, or by sending direct inquiries to businesses you are interested in. Internships allow a candidate the opportunity to develop practical skills, put their education into practice, and interact with professionals in their field of interest. Internships also function as great networki ng opportunities and resume enhancers. If your dream employer offers internship opportunities, you should definitely consider looking into those options. Getting your foot in the door can lead to a full-time position down the road. Expand Your Online Job Search Be sure to include both the larger internet job search sites and the smaller niche sites (such as sites that focus on equine or veterinary related careers) in your online job search. Dont forget about utilizing social media sites to maximize your online presence. Network Social media networking is a good way to let friends and associates know about your job hunt, and you never know where a great job lead will come from. Popular social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter can connect you with friends that could provide referrals or advise you about a job that hasnt yet been advertised to the general public. It is also important to communicate with any industry professionals that you may know. For ex ample, a candidate seeking a position in the equine industry might let their farrier, veterinarian, or riding instructor know that they are actively looking for work. Colleges and universities almost always have career planning resources available to their graduates. Many educational institutions are willing to provide lists of prior graduates that have gone on to work in your desired industry or a closely related area, so be sure to leverage your colleges alumni contacts. Also be sure to ask professors and advisors if they can connect you with successful former students, professional colleagues, or business contacts. Consider Relocation If you are geographically mobile, which is the case for many new graduates, consider applying to jobs in an area that has more opportunities than your current location. For example, those seeking an equine position might find more opportunities in an area known for producing horses, such as Ocala or Lexington. Revamp Your Resume If your resu me and cover letter arent generating any interest, consider revamping both documents. There are many resume examples available online which can be found with a quick search. Your local library is also likely to have dozens of books on resume writing. Many educational institutions give their students and graduates access to a career planning center, which often includes a service where they will look over a resume and provide helpful tips for improvement. If this service is available you should definitely take them up on it If it is not available, consider asking your professors, advisors, and local professionals to look over your resume and give you any tips that they can. Some public libraries also offer career planning classes.

18 Interview Questions that are Fun to Answer

18 Interview Questions that are Fun to Answer18 Interview Questions that are Fun to Answer There are so many ways to prepare for an vorstellungsgesprch and set yourself up for success. A quick Glassdoor search will find you the internets most common situational and behavioral interview questions . You can write up your answers following the S.T.A.R. method . You can sit with a headhunter to mock interview for hours. With the growing volume of candidates applying for jobs (up to 1000 people sometimes for even an internship position), the high cost of turnover, and the war for great talent, recruitment teams are doing whatever they can to separate the best candidates from the best-practiced candidates. Sometimes, this means throwing a hilarious curveball question your way. To get some real-time data on whats really going on in interviews, I took to social media platforms to ask, Whats the most fun question youve ever been asked in an interview? Here are real, true responses from professionals across industries around the worldSo what really is the point of asking questions that have no objectively correct answer? In short, hiring managers want to see what youre like unscripted. While they can easily assess your skills by examining your past projects and experiences, it can be challenging to get to know you as a person and get a sense of your compatibility with a team. Since the rest of an interview can be fairly easy for to prepare for, organizations want to see how you think through problems and approach abstract situations. For example in question 7, How do you fit a giraffe in a fridge?, asking questions like What kind of fridge, or What age is the giraffe, would show the interviewer that youre able to connect concepts and ideas, and think outside the box. Is there a great deal of validity to this method? Probably not. However, this is a great opportunity for you show the hiring managers just how funny, cool, and creative you can be. The w orst thing you can do in a situation like this is to respond by saying I dont know or by getting flustered. The next time you hear one of these questions, rather than freak out over the absurdity, take a beat, think logically, and remember that there is no right or wrong answer, only an opportunity to stand out from the crowd.

What Kelso Knows about Work

What Kelso Knows about Work What Kelso Knows about Work Most of what he said was told to many of us by wise parents, mentors and friends- its worth noting that teens, as a group, tend not to listen to this kind of advicethat is unless its coming from Mila Kunis BF. So whatd he have to say? Read on1) Opportunity looksa lot like hard work. While its true that he didnt come up with this bit of wisdom, it sure sounded a lot mora convincing coming out of his wry grin than it does making the rounds on Facebook in e-card format. But underneath the cliche, this is as true as its ever been. With technology getting more accessible and simpler to use, it can be easy to think that really hard work has no place in this world. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Nose to the grindstone, one foot in front of the other, and head down can make even more impact in a workforce thats increasingly social, chaotic and automated.2)Never quit your first jobuntil you have your next job. Ashton (Chris) Kutcher outlined the jobs hed been working since he was 13 and explained how he would never leave a job until he had another job. Hes the ultimate passive candidate Seriously though, in todays economy, this is advice that makes sense for just about everyone but especially entry level job seekers, who can be pretty starry-eyed about their market worth in a shaky economy.3) I never had a job that I was too good for. This one didnt go quite as viral as the others but it was MY favorite. As you climb the career ladder its easy to forget the jobs that got you there- the bosses who seemed awful at the time but taught you so much the mandatory tasks that seemed draining but gave your day structure the scary paycheck-to-paycheck existence that showed you the value of money- these all have importance. With freelancing and contingent work becoming more common these days, most of us willhave to go back to our roots, doing menial tasks at startups, working late into the night on a side project. Bottom line? If Ashton Kutcher can sweep up Cheerio dust, you can for SURE finish that spreadsheet.4) The world is made up of people no smarter than you. The truly inspiring parte of Kutchers speech was something that no one ever told me I had to learn it for myself. Its easy to look at luminaries and think that they know more than you do. There are plenty of people in the business world who will say That wont work, we already tried it. But while its important to learn from the experiences of others, its also crucial to realize that your ideas and concepts are as valuable as anyone elses.5) Dont live a life, build a life. Creating your own destiny sounds like something a young, beautiful person would say, but that doesnt mean its not true. Instead of clocking in and out of a job that doesnt satisfy with people that dont appreciate your contributions, more and more job seekers are looking for alternative ways of working. Building a life is a far cry from just living life. When youre working 40-80 hour work weeks, it can get very easy to forget that.Watch the whole speech here.

What are some other ways to get yourself job-interview ready? Weve come up with a few strategies to consider. What to expect in a job interview, and ways to prepareExpect it to be all about you.Set aside any shyness or reticence and prepare to explain yourself- in a good way. First impressions count, of course, particularly during your job interview introduction. Youll want to keep your composure and not get rattled under a barrage of questions. Its also helpful to school yourself on what to do when employers ask illegal questions, such as queries about your marital status, children, or health issues.Be ready to talk about employment gaps. Its always a good policy to be honest about employment gaps, particularly if the gaps are lengthy. Your goal is to present any periods between jobs in the best light possible. Working to find a new job, volunteering, becoming a parent or caregiver, or traveling are some reasons that may be viewed in your favor. Youll want to emphasize any skills you gained during employment gaps that will make you a better employee now. You should also be prepared to explain a firing in a composed, upfront, and matter-of-fact way.Describe projects youve been involv ed in end-to-end.One of the best proactive moves you can make in a job interview is to steer the conversation toward your achievements. If you can point proudly to a project where you were instrumental from inception to completion, consider it an achievement that you can talk about without feeling like youre bragging. Touting your achievements (with appropriate modesty) is a strategy that may help you position yourself as the top candidate for the job.Prepare for the salary question.Questions about salary during a job interview can be uncomfortable. But you can prepare yourself by knowing what youre worth based on your qualifications and your salary history, and by consulting authoritative sources. Dont feel its your role to bring up specific numbers, but if youre asked, be prepared with salary ranges, based on your research.Want to work remotely? Be ready to ta lk about why youre okay working alone. If your goal is to find a remote job, you may be asked about your temperament and ability to work in a non-traditional work environment- say, a home office or other virtual location. Tough job interview questions for a remote job may focus not just on whether your home office is adequately equipped, but how youll stay motivated and whether you can troubleshoot problems on your own.Bring questions of your own.Its just about inevitable as the interview is winding up, the hiring manager may turn the tables and ask if you have questions for them. If youve done some research and have insightful things to ask about the job or the company, nows the time for your big interview finish. However, when you have no questions that add to the conversation, it can be totally okay to finish with a non-question grace note, such as expressing that youve enjoyed the discussion and look forward to the next step in the hiring process.Need job interview and career hel p? fully online career coaching can help. Successful Project Management Switch to a New Industry

Successful Project Management Switch to a New IndustrySuccessful Project Management Switch to a New IndustryProject management is a highly transferable skill, so its common to find project managers wanting to check out other industries after spending some time working in one area. And the good news, its highly possible. If you want to make the shift from running computer software projects to launching insurance products or working in green manufacturing, you can. Core project management skills like tracking your project, running successful project meetings, and risk management are the same regardless of your industry. Why Change Industries? There are lots of reasons why you might want to change industries. The most obvious one is that you have lost your job and are looking for a new one, and dont want to restrict yourself to only vacancies in your past industry. You also might want a new challenge. Moving from one industry to another is a great way to gain experience and exposure to other ways of working, products, and environments. This is a more common reason to change industries than you might think. A 2015 global survey by LinkedInsays that 21 percent of Millennials- those ages 1835- switch jobs because they are interested in trying out a new industry. Its 11 percent for those ages 3650. The door isnt closed for Baby Boomers either seven percent of them report changing jobs for the opportunity to test out another industry. Perhaps youve noticed that your own industry is on the decline and you want to make the jump now. Or perhaps your company isnt performing as well as it could, and youre worried about the future stability of your current role. Changing industries is also a way to get paid more as a project manager. Whatever your reason for looking for a new career in project management, you can put your skills to use in a different industry. Project management in the IT industry is different from construction project management or project management in healthcare, but not because the project management core skills are different. If you are seriously committed to changing industries, you can definitely make the switch. Here are some things you can do to help you succeed in a new career industry. Ask Questions First, youll want to find out as much as you can about your new or target industry. Whether its your first day in a manufacturing firm or you are just testing the waters with your contacts in retail to find out if youd like a role there, ask questions. Keep a note of the answers that you receive from your expert contacts. You can turn these into process maps or crib sheets. These will help you at interview and in your first few weeks in a new role. The more you know about what you are getting into, the more confident you will feel. Take Classes Joining a new industry is easier if you can prove to a recruiter that you are seriously interested in it. Taking classes is one of the ways that you can do that. There are plen ty of short online courses that you can take without investing a lot of money. MOOCs (massive open online courses) are a good place to start, as these are free and often run by universities with fantastic reputations. Once you have joined a company in a new industry, see what classes they can offer you, too. Consider internal and external courses. The faster you get confident with the subject matter and details about the industry and how the company works, the faster youll feel like you are really making a difference. Then you can get on and enjoy your new career. Many industries have professional bodies that offer introductory certificates in the subject matter. As a project manager, you wont need to know the ins and outs of insurance legislation or how to sell insurance products, but you might benefit from an introductory certificate in the industry basics as this will cover all the terminology you are likely to come across on those projects. Generally, all the options open to you that you used when you studied to become a project manager are open to you studying about a new industry. Network Meet up with people in your target industry, or the one you have just joined. Your new employer might have professional or informal networking opportunities, or look at what is available locally to you. It is an easy way to make new connections in your new or target industry and ask the questions that you might not want to ask your employer. Get a Mentor A mentor is someone you can talk to informally. They generally have a lot of experience in their field and are prepared to share that with you. Getting a mentor when you join a new industry is a good way to quickly tap into a wealth of experience that wouldnt otherwise be available to you. Having someone at the end of the phone or messaging app can give you confidence when you want to ask a quick question or gain clarity on a particular element of your project. In fact, mentors are valuable in all areas of profe ssional project management life regardless of your career path, its good to invest in a mentor relationship if you can. Join Professional Groups Its likely that your industry has a professional group of its own (probably the body that administers and regulates the industry qualifications). Join. Even if all you do is read the organizations magazine, it will help you stay up-to-date with the challenges of the industry and boost your knowledge. Professional groups also have networking opportunities. Check out their online forums if you cant make it to any of the events in person. Often conferences or seminars are recorded and the videos made available for members for free. Read Voraciously Read everything you can about your industry. Specifically, the areas related to the first projects you are working on for your new employer. It will help you make a bigger contribution more quickly. 3 Things to Watch Out for When Changing Industries Project management is project manageme nt, right? Yes, but once you are in a different industry, there are some quirks to be aware of. It can be severely career limiting to go into a new commercial organization and assume that you know everything just because you have 20 years of experience in non-profits. Be aware of what might be subtly different, and this will help you transition to your new industry more quickly, and with less friction. Here are 3 things to watch out for. Industry Jargon This is the main barrier to switching industries smoothly. Even acronyms that you have used for years might mean something else in your company. Keep a running glossary of terms that you have heard and add the explanations. Note down jargon in meetings and then check your understanding later. People will be happy to help clarify what terms mean if you ask them, so ask. It can save a lot of embarrassment. Just remember to update your personal glossary, so you dont ask the same question several times because youve forgotten. There can be a lot of new languages to take in when you first start out, so set yourself up a document to capture it- something that you can look back on when you need it. The Market Different industries have different competitive pressures. Where time to market might be paramount when building smartphone apps, a quality outcome (even if that means taking a little longer) might be more appropriate elsewhere. The challenges facing healthcare are not the same as those in oil and gas, and the professional services industry is going to look very different from your previous experience running government projects. Research is your friend. Build your strategic perspective on the industry as quickly as you can. All the networking, questions and professional ready that you are doing will set you up well to quickly adapt to the new pressures of a different industry. Different Practices Your familiar project management processes might not travel as well as you had hoped, so be prepared to tweak them fo r your new environment. For example, health and safety might be front of mind for engineering and construction, but shift to a low-risk office environment for an insurance firm, and you probably wont find dedicated health and safety plans for every project. IT security is crucial, but when you arent dealing with ransomware threats, your new companys approach to security could well be structured differently. Your team might be set up in a different project organization structure, one that perhaps you arent as used to. Equally, may need to make the shift to Agile project management or vice versa. Be open to the different project management practices that you might find in your new industry. You can quickly adapt to them once you know what is expected of you. Finally, dont hesitate to (tactfully) suggest ways that existing practices could be changed. It is likely that you were recruited from outside their industry partly to bring new insights and a fresh pair of eyes to some of the pro ject management processes that they are currently working with. Youll soon work out if your boss isnt prepared to listen to your ideas. Careers in project management transfer easily because you have a lot of the skills that will help you be a success in your new roles. Communication skills, for example, are the same whichever industry you work in. However, youll need to use your initiative to make a success of switching to a new industry. Remember, even your dream project management job has its highs and lows. Plan your career switch, build your skills during those first months in a new industry, and, hopefully, youll have fewer lows than highs. Youll grow your confidence knowing that switching industries was the best career move for you.

Kung Fu Control vs. Pacino Passion

Kung Fu Control vs. Pacino Passion From the perspective of a slice of toast, control, when it is needed, is like butter with it, youve got a winning formula without it, youre probably (only) toast. OK. So control is generally, even if not always, a good thing. This means there are two challenges in controlling controlKnowing which kind of control to try to exert in any given situation.Knowing when to relinquish or otherwise do without it.The iconic image of a self-controlled kung fu master in serene control of not only any assailant, but also of his inner environment, including his feelings, concentration, focus, weapons and skills, is very appealing. But, in appeal and merit it is countered by the equally iconic images of passionate Pablo Picasso, fiery out-of-control whooping Al Pacino and lovestruck/star-crossed Romeo and Julietah, those LatinsBut wait Out of what kind of control?Assuming that in some situations control is a good thing, it remains to decide which kind of control to shoot for. Heres a menu of forms of control it is useful to identify and important not to confuse with each otherWeatherman effect control Being a meteorologist gives you a degree of what can be called effect controlcontrol over the effects of things you are powerless to stop, e.g., a hurricane, tornado or blizzard, e.g., by evacuation, retreating to a storm shelter or by chopping extra logs for the fireplace. The heart of this kind of control is the power of prediction and having the resources to deal with the consequences when the prediction comes true. In an office environment, an example would be having duplicate copies of your project report that your absent-minded boss is notorious for misplacing and losing. This can also be described as a form of partial control.Engineer cause control This kind of control amounts to three things1. prevention 2. staging 3. execution, implementation and mai ntenance. Designing a bridge or a jet involves all three konzeptioning structures and function that will prevent problems, framing the processes and structures to get the job done, and concretely carrying them out and maintaining or upgrading them. This most closely approximates the ideal of total controland the kind of control that makes micro-managing types drool. From this perspective, designing a boss who is incapable of misplacing a report, or failing that, designing a fail-safe system of filing making compensatory backup files unnecessary would perfectly exemplify cause control. If you think of an engineer as being like God, or vice versa, this kind of cause control can be further analyzed like thisPure Designer Control Deism is the philosophical idea that once God designed the universe, He/She set it loose, free from any further direct control and allowed to unwind like a watch designed by a Master Watchmaker or a jet created by Boeing engineers. Translated into terms of HR dep artments, this means controlling your job flow by having a system design that incorporates preparations for any contingency, including the sudden disappearance of the new recruit on Day-1.Intervener Designer Control Deism is in contrast to the idea of a much more interventionist Designer, who, in addition to or instead of designing the clockwork, will tinker with it from time to time, in order to bring about, through direct control, changes that seem suitableusually in the form of fine-tuning or miracles. Engineering refits and accounting systems modifications fall into this category of cause control.Kung fu-master contingency control The idealized control exerted by a wispy-bearded kung fu master is different from both themeteorologists and engineers control paradigms. A kung fu master, unlike a meteorologist, cannot and need not predict what will happen nor, like the engineer, engineer it in advance. Instead, with respect to the outer world, he exercises purely contingency control being prepared for whatever happens, despite neither predicting nor creating it. Its as though he is calmly and confidently making his way through a dark, menacing forest, totally ready for the unexpected. Parallel to this control is the Masters unwavering self-control that makes this kind of comprehensive contingency control possible. In a business environment, kung fu-master control amounts to being ready to roll with and parry the punches, even when they are, in detail, utterly unforeseen and unpredictable. It means being mentally, logistically, operationally and otherwise ready for whatever happens and being confident and calm in virtue of being that ready.Like weatherman control, this is reactive but like engineer cause-control it is proactive to the extent that built into the makeup and design of a kung fu master are capacities to deal with a very wide range of contingencies, including emergencies. The difference, however, is that the kung fu master, unlike the engineer and pos sibly under the influence of a Taoist or Buddhist doctrine of non-action, doesnt try to cause anything, including forcing others do thingsexcept obey the laws of physics and collapse when he pummels them, while nonetheless being ready for whatever they may throw at him.Caution about PassionWhat about passion? If construed as the opposite of self-control, when should it be held in check or reined in? One clue to an answer is whether it is seen as control that is relinquished, surrendered or waived, or, instead, lost.It can be argued that when control is voluntarily relinquished it is probably safe to do so. As examples of this kind of relinquished control, theres allowing others to tickle you, agreeing to skinny sauce or choosing to resign as CEO in order to spend more time with the family or golfing. On the other hand, when what is experienced feels like a loss of control and a complete surrender to the moment, things can get very tricky and muddy. For example, surrendering to heat o f sensual passion can feel like loss of control, feel very good and turn out quite well for all concerned. Yet, when you read, He lost control and you are probably braced and rightly prepared to hear an unhappy story as the completion. This perspective may seem to be reinforced by the concept of the Passion of Christ, which somehow suggests a pawns passivity as a consequence or in the face of a loss of control over ones fate, seized by ones persecutors. However, a careful look at the etymology of passion suggests otherwise, and, at most, an emotional connection with what we (should) do, rather than an obstacle to it. In this connection, it has been suggested thatThe Latin sie sagen es, passionem, which means to endure, was tagged onto the word pie (which means suffering) Note as in Michelangelos Pieta and later imbued with the sense of the Greek word pathos to create the meaning of passion, as the endurance of great suffering (as that of Jesus) and that the modern meaning, which ma y have derived from some poetic wordplay on the sufferings of love was not used until the early 1600s, but has gradually become more commonly used than the original meaning.Another complication is that passion and self-control are not always mutually exclusive a passionate research scientist toiling to find a cure for the cancer that has afflicted his wife will nonetheless be utterly disciplined and self-controlled in his lab work. Such an easily comprehended scenario merely reflects the fact that we can be intensely passionate about our goals, yet in complete self-control and control of the elements constituting or related to the means.Even the kung fu master is likely to passionately defend his values while calmly defending himself from physical attack or stoically tolerating it.As for Al Pacino, the degree of self-control and discipline that underlies his passionate portrayals further illustrates not only how passionate ends can require self-controlled means, but also quite the o ppositeHow passionate means, e.g., fiery dramatic performances, help achieve very disciplined, focused and cool-headed or equally passionately held goals, e.g., to become a master of ones craft and of huge troves of wealth and fame.

How smelling lavender could actually relieve anxiety

How smelling lavender could actually relieve anxietyHow smelling lavender could actually relieve anxietyNext time you spot a lavender-scented candle, take a deep breath. A new study inFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience builds upon the science of why a whiff can make you say Ahhhh in relief. The researchers found that when they got mice to sniff linalool, a component in lavender, it had the same effect of an anxiety-reducing Valium on the mice Linalool tickled odor-sensitive neurons in the nose that send signals to just the right spots in the brain - the same ones triggered by Valium, The New York Times wrote about on the findings. The history of using lavender as treatmentAlthough this study tested lavender on mice, not humans, the researchers see the possibility of using lavender to treat anxiety in humans. behauptung findings give us a foundation towards clinical application of linalool odor for anxiety disorders, the study concludes.Lavender has a long history of being used to tr eat ailments. Around 1910, French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse learned of the soothing effect of lavender when he burned his hand and rinsed it using lavender. The next day, his hand started healing, kicking off research into how it could be used to heal World War I soldiers.Nowadays, it has become its own industry. It has been touted as a solution for acne, bug bites, and stress. As Americans have become more anxious, our search for homeopathic solutions has become more extensive. About 18% of adults in America met the diagnostic criteria for at least one anxiety disorder within the past year. Under these stressful times, an aromatic essence marketed to harmonize the health of the body, mind, and spirit sounds soothing.I personally am not at the stage of wanting to bake cakes with lavender, but I do keep a bushel of lavender in my bedroom. I cannot attest to feeling less anxious as a result, but I do find its scent to be relaxing.

Is it Finally Okay to Include a Photo in Your Resume

Is it Finally Okay to Include a Photo in Your Resume Is it Finally Okay to Include a Photo in Your Resume The problem is that with the rise of social media, this landseemingly sensible position of withholding physical appearance from resumes is becoming increasingly nonsensical, because research from CareerBuilder shows that between 43 percent and 55 percent of employers can and do check candidates social media profiles as a matter of course, which will most likely give employers access to at least two photos of any candidate they wish to research. So, this means that in this day and age, many employers will see more than one photo of a candidate prior to short-listing whether or not the resume contains a photo.Does this mean that its therefore okay to routinely include photos in your resume? Well, we are not quite there yet, as although I think that the idea of photos in resumes is becoming desensitized due to the flood of photos on social media, there is still a residual paranoia about photos in resumes. So, you might want to ensure to not send photos for employers who specifically asked you not to or for conservative sectors where it could be viewed a little oddly. But, as a result of social media, the cat is effectively out of the bag when it comes to seeing images on potential candidates, and if these images are going to be seen anyway, I think that it is time that candidates started to use photos to their advantage in job applications by using them in an appropriate and highly promotional way to actually increase their gunst der stunde of being short-listed.This task is made easier at the moment as with so many people afraid to use photos in a resume you have an opportunity to stand-out in the pile of resumes, simply because you have included a photo. You can take control of the image you present by having a specially prepared resume photo, which presents the most professional and business relevant view of yourself to the employer. Have a picture that ref lects your personality and their culture of their business. Do you want to appear like a cool, intellectual, or a warm relationship builder, or a dogged, determined sales type? Use the picture, to capture the essence of your personal brand and also use the picture to create affinity between you and the employer and not to create barriers.Done well, a photo can promote your personal brand and demonstrate affinity between you and employer and make you literally leap of the page. As they say, a picture literally speaks a thousand words, and so I think that unless it has been outlawed or will look strange in your profession, it is much more than OK to include a photo in your resume. If executed properly, a photo in a resume will differentiate you it will communicate your personal brand in an instant, (remember you have just 6 seconds to impress a recruiterwith your resume), giving you a further edge in the short-listing process. I also think it can help to create an affinity with the pro spective employer as long as your picture is in tune with and reflects the employers company culture. Going Up Building Your Elevator Pitch

Going Up Building Your Elevator PitchBuilding Your Elevator PitchGoing Up Building Your Elevator PitchYou may have heard of the elevator pitch. Its a brief statement - 30 to 45 seconds long, give or take - of your job skills and qualifications and how you could utilize them for your next employer. It acts as an oral professional summary. The reason its called an elevator pitch (or elevator speech) is that, in theory, youre supposed to imagine youre articulating the entire statement to a busy executive or hiring manager in the time it takes to complete an elevator ride.It can also serve as an answer to the oft-asked job interview question Tell me about yourself, as the basis for the Professional Summary that will appear on your resume, or as an ice breaker at a cocktail party when someone asks what you do.If the statement is too long to be completed in an elevator ride, it could be too much for someone to absorb or could be a sign that you dont have a strong handle on the value you ca n offer an employer. If you want to craft your own elevator pitch, start by asking yourself these six questions1)What am I really good at that makes a difference for an employer?2)What have I accomplished in my career that was of great value to my employers?3)What are the skills that have enabled me to achieve in my career?4)What personal traits (or soft skills) do I have that complement those other skills?5)Do my educational credentials (diplomas, degrees, professional certifications) enhance my employment background?6)What kind of position, and at what level in the organization, am I looking for in my next career move?Lets say youre a sales professional with 10 years of experience, the last five for a technology hardware vendor. Heres how you might answer each question1)Im a sales professional with a solid track record, good at winning new geschftliches miteinander and generating repeat business. I live by the motto The client always comes first.2)In each of the last five years, I have exceeded my sales quota and helped boost my companys market share in two industries.3)Im a whiz at web research, which allows me to target my sales pitches to what I believe are a clients pain points. My organizational skills are also solid, with much thanks to my PDA.4)I have solid communication skills, especially listening. I like to listen more than I like to talk.5)My bachelors degree in business with a concentration in marketing has proven to be an excellent foundation for my sales career.6)Im looking for a high-profile sales role with a Fortune 500 technology hardware company that can use someone of my skill level to generate more business in a particular market segment or segments. Now that you have the answers, put it all together in a brief paragraphIm an experienced sales professional with a solid track record of winning new and repeat business for a technology hardware provider. Id like to continue that success for a Fortune 500 provider that wants to generate more bu siness in a particular market segment. In each of the past five years, I have exceeded my sales quota and helped boost my companys market share in two industries. My technological proficiency, particularly in web research and use of the PDA, complement my organizational and communication skills. Im also a great listener and that helps me understand my clients pain points and address their needs head-on. Since my college days as a business major with a concentration in marketing, I have been fascinated by the sales process and am driven by the impact I can have on a companys growth.I read that out loud (well, not very loud) and it took exactly 40 seconds, long enough for a 10-floor elevator ride with two stops in between. Then the trick is trying to remember it all well enough that you can speak it flawlessly. What about you? What have you accomplished in your career that would be part of your elevator pitch? Please share your thoughts with us.

Architecture as a Career Path A Realistic Look

Architecture as a Career Path A Realistic Look Architecture as a Career Path A Realistic Look Architecture as a Career Path: A Realistic Look When one thinks of having a career in architecture, the first thing you might imagine is a brilliant skyscraper going up. Maybe even the next Empire State Building. But Peter Leffe, mechanical engineer, architect, and consultant, says you may want to change your state of mind. For a mechanical engineer who wants to become that kind of architect, you have a huge amount of competition with the architects already trying to get work and many of them arent even doing that well. Laffes theory is simple. Who says thats the only kind of building? Architects who are also mechanical engineers are incredibly valued when it comes to, for example, factories, he says. When you think of a factory, its really not about the beauty of the building from the outside but the inner workings. Think of the equipment, the machinery. It takes a specialized understanding of machine design to build a structure that will be most to the advantage [of the occupant]. In this case, the structure is really just an envelope to cover the machinery. And its actually usually best to associate with an architecture firm for that kind of project instead of competing against them. Peter Leffe Another area in demand for mechanical engineers is among the most important of facilities: hospitals. You have loads and loads of systems, youre talking environmental control, he says. It requires an efficient mind. Plumbing is also a major factor for a mechanical engineer to bring their strengths to. Someone with an engineering background has something to offer an architectural firm here educationally that most architects just dont have. One of Leffes leading niches related to architecture is an area you might never guess. Forensic failure analysis, he says. Many architectural failures you might see have to be explained in terms of engineering. The failure wouldnt be the layout of the building but a beam failure or damaged foundations. Or how about the time he evaluated a stairwellof an airplane. You might not think about the steps that take you aboard an airliner but thats architecture as well. Look at mobile staircases in airports, people fall down on them. Its the architectural part of how the geometry of a staircase should be able to comply with the standards within the industry; you get mechanical engineering crossover in those areas. It also goes to the architectural elements of walkways and handicapped ramps. Again, its not just about a pretty structure, its about making it workwell. For those who still have their dreams in the tallest buildings, Leffe just wants you to know what youre in for. Three years of schooling for a professional architecture degree, three years of interning and you still have to pass those testsnot a guarantee there either, he says. If Im doing all that then Id rather [play the percentages] in terms of the work Im going to get. There can be a good payoff with a realistic strategy, and there can be fun challenges. Tips to Use LinkedIn Effectively for Job Hunting

Tips to Use LinkedIn Effectively for Job Hunting Tips to Use LinkedIn Effectively for Job Hunting Every human resources director, headhunter, or recruiter will tell you the same thing: the best way to find a job is through networking, which includes social media. The best social media networking tool for professionals is, without question, LinkedInyet, according to Wayne Breitbarth, author of The Power Formula for LinkedIn Success, most professionals dont know how to use it properly, especially for job hunting. To demonstrate how connected the engineering community is on LinkedIn, a recent search for the phrase mechanical engineer turned up 68,400 responses. There were 347 active postings for engineering jobs and a search of LinkedIn updates showed 2,183 mentions of hiring mechanical engineers from HR directors and recruiters. Thats a powerful presence at your fingertips. Engineers and IT personnel tend to work alone and dont go for the crowd, says Breitbarth. When I am teaching a LinkedIn class I can always pick out the engineers and IT specialists because they dont seem to be engaged; however, after the event they usually come up and talk to me because I didnt go deep enough. Breitbarth stresses that engineers must have the right keywords in the headline, job title, and summary of their LinkedIn profile. Its not good enough to simply say senior mechanical engineer, says Breitbarth. Be sure to include your engineering specialties as well, such as systems engineering, hydraulic engineering, etc. In general, engineers are not great writers and storytellers. People expect engineers to communicate with scientific, technical jargon, says Breitbarth. Therefore an effective way to stand out from the rest of the job-hunting crowd is to show some personality and storytelling in your profileemployers will notice that. Build Those Connections Theres a reason LinkedIn stresses building connectionsit is a great way to network and create connections within your industry. This is especially true for engineers, who may not have the greatest networking skills and often work alone. Most people dont realize how important their connections are, says Breitbarth. It is very hard to find a job through LinkedIn with only 30 or 40 connections. Increase that to 200 or more and youll get somewhere with your job hunt. The easiest first step is clicking on the job tab on LinkedIns opening page and typing in mechanical engineer to see what jobs are available. Most companies also have a page on LinkedIn. Click the Follow button on the company page to receive the latest news and job postings (be aware, however, that the companies you follow will know you are following them). Join industry groups that are a good match for your expertise and career objectives. These also often have job tabs where you can post your own job requirements at no charge. Another useful job-hunting feature on LinkedIn that few people utilize is the alumni search. Go to Contacts and slide down to Schools, says Breitbarth. Here you can find all the people on LinkedIn who graduated from your alma mater, the years they attended, where they have worked and what they are doing now. Connecting with alumni is a very effective way to network. Connections are the gasoline in the tank that makes the engine work on LinkedIn, says Breitbarth. If you are messing around as a job seeker at 20 to 50 connections, you are doing just thatmessing around. Get serious. You know and trust 250 people who are on LinkedIn. Go out and get connected to them and LinkedIn may help you discover your next job or opportunity. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. To demonstrate how connected the engineering community is on LinkedIn, a recent search of LinkedIn updates showed 2,183 mentions of ‘hiring mechanical engineers’ from HR directors and recruiters.

The New 9-to-5ers Guide to Office Lingo

The New 9-to-5er’s Guide to Office Lingo The New 9-to-5er’s Guide to Office Lingo You’re a week into your first corporate gig when your boss stops by your cubicle, coffee cup in hand ( la Office Space), and casually mentions, “Hey there, with the restructuring last week, we’re going to need some of your bandwidth to develop action items for the sales push- can we grab some time this afternoon?”Huh?When you’re the new one, it can feel like your boss is speaking another language- one filled with buzzwords and acronyms that even a good set of Corporate Flashcards couldn’t prepare you for. We’ve been there. So, if your manager’s lingo has your head spinning, here’s your guide.Bandwidthn.  time or capacity to do work, particularly work that was not originally assigned to you“If you have some bandwidth today, can you take over one of Amy’s financial reports?”If your manager asks you if you have any bandwidth, she wants to know if you have any spare time aside from the projects you’re already working on. The correct answer is almost always: “I ’m pretty busy with [insert reminder of what else she assigned you], but could make time for this if needed [or if I deprioritize project X].”Pingv. contact“I’ll ping you after my meeting so we can find a time to discuss last month’s numbers.”Though it’s not clear why there needs to be a term in place of simple words like “call” or “email,” corporate culture has invented one. “Ping” means to contact someone by any of several methods- which makes it even more confusing. You’ll instantly be reminded of the dilemma you used to face with your high school crush: “Wait- does he want me to call? Email? Text?”Drill Down v. go into more detail“When we drill drown into that account, we can see that they made a purchase last week.”Again, we have a simple word that means the same thing: Look. Yes, drilling down means to look further into a matter in order to get more details. But you wouldn’t want to be caught using a regular word, now would you?Deep Diven. a more detailed analysis than what you did last time“I need you to do a deep dive into last week’s numbers to figure out our budget for next month.”Pick up a venti latte and get ready to strain your eyes, because if you’re asked for a deep dive, it usually means you’ll be looking at data for a long time. Typically, this means a time-consuming look into numbers or other documents for the purpose of gathering detailed information- just how you wanted to spend your lunch break.  Circle Backv. catch up later“After you resolve the issue with the client, can you circle back to me?”When someone asks you to circle back, she usually means something to the effect of “check back in” or “follow up.” Because, again, we already had words that meant the same thing, but wanted to make sure we had a more important-sounding phrase to use in the office.Bubble Upv. tell your boss what’s going on- but only if it’s important“If a client’s giving you trouble, make sure to bu bble it up.”  This is your boss’ way of saying- I will help you if you need it, but only bring me the important stuff. Instead of asking the woman who sits next to you about how to handle the inconsolable client on the line, tell your direct supervisor- he’ll be more helpful than your cubemate anyway.  Cascade v. tell other people, so your boss doesn’t have to“We’ll need you to cascade the information about the budget cuts to your team.”When your management team can’t stand to be the bearers of bad news, they’ll tell you to cascade information down to your team- meaning it’s up to you to let your employees down gently. Good luck.Take it Offlinev. talk about this later“If you’d like to discuss that further, we’ll have to take it offline.”This term is usually used when you’re getting a little off topic during a meeting, or need to talk about something confidential. So even if you thought the team meeting about next year’s budget was the perfect segue in to a conversation about why you deserve a raise, you’ll need to meet separately rather than discussing in front of the entire department.Ridiculous as this term is (you’re “online” in the meeting?), it’s also very useful for reminding Joe from Marketing and Susie from Partnerships that no one else in the sales meeting wants to listen to them hash through every detail of the new ad campaign.High Level View n. a vague description“I only have a few minutes, but I can at least give you a high level view of our software functionality.”A high level view explains a concept without getting into the small, technical details. This is usually used when there’s limited time- or when it’s outside your area of expertise and you really don’t want Steve from IT to explain the nitty-gritty details to you, anyway.  Low-Hanging Fruit n. easily attainable accomplishments“We need to go for the low-hanging fruit on this one for a quick boost in income.”This particularly overused i diom refers to easily attainable accomplishments, quick sales, or goals that you can tackle immediately. Or, in other over-used corporate words, “quick wins.”  Whitespacen. potential sales to existing clients“Let’s take advantage of our whitespace and have our inside sales team start reaching out to all our Tier 2 clients.”This industry term refers to potential sales that can be made to existing clients. For example, if your company sells office supplies, and a current client only buys paper from you, possible whitespace could include the sale of paperclips and staplers. Because- hello- how else are they going to hold stacks of papers together?Action Itemsn. things you can do“Let’s prioritize the action items for this project.”As opposed to regular tasks on your to-do list, action items are tasks on your to-do list with a slightly more important title. They are also supposed to be a reminder that talking about stuff is not the same as taking action.  Going Forwardpre p. in the future“Going forward, you should focus on staying caught up on your project backlog.”This seemingly friendly phrase isn’t as innocuous as it sounds- beware of serious undertones. These words can really mean “In the future, don’t ever do this again.”  Tell us! What are some of the cryptic buzzwords used in your office?Photo of team meeting courtesy of Shutterstock.

8 Tips for Holiday Gift-Giving in the Office

8 Tips for Holiday Gift-Giving in the Office 8 Tips for Holiday Gift-Giving in the Office Buying gifts for friends and family can be hard enough, but when it comes to holiday gift-giving at your workplace, things can get even trickier. If you find yourself a little uneasy about the prospect of buying the proper gift, don’t fret. An Accountemps survey sheds light on several questions: Is it proper for supervisors to give their staff holiday gifts (63 percent say yes), is it OK for workers to give their bosses gifts (58 percent said yes), and what kinds of gifts aren't appropriate (more on that later). See our SlideShare, below, on surviving this Season to be Jolly (at Work). How do you come up with ideas of what to give? These eight tips will help make holiday gift-giving as easy as enjoying the cookies, cakes and other assorted treats that come your way this time of year. 1. Start a conversation If this is your first holiday season on the job, talk to coworkers who have experience with buying gifts, whether it's for your boss or for your office’s holiday party. Even if you’ve been to previous holiday gatherings at your office, discussing gift exchange ideas and sharing insights can be a kind of informal team-building exercise. The conversations you end up having will make it more likely that you’ll buy an appropriate present. 2. Know the parameters If you're shopping for an office gift exchange, do you know in advance who will receive your gift, or will the recipient be determined at the party? What about spending guidelines? Is there a special theme? Find out as much as you can before you go shopping. If it’s the traditional “white elephant” game, where a gift may pass through many hands before finally ending up with the eventual recipient, you’ll need to get something that will work for anyone. 3. Make it personal - or not If it's not a Secret Santa event and you know who will get your gift, put some thought into personalizing it. You could give a book related to something the recipient is interested in, or a beauty product that you've been complimented for using. You could give a monogrammed bottle stopper for a wine aficionado, or coffee beans and a mug for a coffee lover. On the other hand, if you are buying for people you don't know well, avoid the overly personal and stick with something they can use in the office. 4. Keep it PG clean Use the motion picture rating system to give you some guidance for your gift ideas. Use PG-13 as the outer boundary for what to buy, leaning more toward PG or G. Speaking of movies, prepaying for a pair tickets to any movie playing at a local cinema is a good way to give the recipient some choice while still staying well within the limits of what’s acceptable. To add some originality to that particular gift, cut out movie ads for a half-dozen films now playing, paste them to a piece of cardboard, and attach a spinning pointer - a simple but clever prop to help the recipient decide what movie to see. You can take this approach with many types of gift cards for coffee shops, restaurants or stores. Basically, when in doubt, think of things that will add cheer to the proceedings during this season to be jolly. 5. Tap the food network One place you’re apt to share gift ideas with coworkers is at lunch. Do you and your coworkers have several regular favorite lunchtime spots? If so, consider using gift certificates from those eateries as presents. If you’re on good terms with the proprietors and tell them what you’re planning, they may even offer to increase the value beyond your purchase price as a way of spreading holiday cheer while also rewarding loyal customers. You could also give food baskets, cookie trays or fancy candies. Or if you're thinking of something a little more fun, place several individual-size bags of chips and chocolates inside a large box, and then wrap it up. 6. Create your own gift With so many websites and local print shops catering to individualized apparel and other gift items, the sky is the limit on gift ideas. If you know ahead of time, for example, that you’ll be buying a gift for Amy in Payroll, and Amy just loves baseball, you could get her baseball-themed business cards that say something like, “Amy Smith, Super Fan!” and “Meet me at the hot dog stand behind home plate, field level.” Need something that will work for anyone? Take a picture of the office and put it on a coffee mug above the words “My Favorite Place!” That should be a gift that garners some attention at your workplace. 7. Consider the presentation No matter what you've chosen for the gift, cheerful packaging shows thoughtfulness. You could include a holiday card with it with a note to personalize it. 8. Don't be overly extravagant (or a Scrooge) Spending too much can make the receiver uncomfortable, while not spending enough can make the gift seem like an afterthought. Luckily, our survey gives you an idea of what's too much or too little. Respondents suggested that $20 is suitable for workers to spend on gifts for their bosses, and for bosses, they could spend $24 on staff. Speaking of fun ... The survey also revealed what not to do in the realm of holiday gift-giving. Managers reported the most inappropriate gifts they've seen. Here are just three, to get you grinning (or cringing): A re-gifted gift from an employee that had been given the year before by the manager A wig A big order of frozen pork (even worse if given to a vegetarian) Thinking about holiday gift-giving should be enjoyable, whether it leads to playful back-and-forth with office mates or just coming up with your own ideas. When all is said and done, the office party is about good cheer, and gift giving should be something you do unconditionally. Keep that in mind throughout your gift-buying adventure, and you’ll be sure to get something that brings cheer to the person on the receiving end. 10 ways to spot a truly exceptional employee

10 ways to spot a truly exceptional employee 10 ways to spot a truly exceptional employee A recent international study surveyed more than 500 business leaders and asked them what sets great employees apart. The researchers wanted to know why some people are more successful than others at work, and the answers were surprising; leaders chose “personality” as the leading reason.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Notably, 78% of leaders said personality sets great employees apart, more than cultural fit (53%) and even an employee’s skills (39%).“We should take care not to make the intellect our God; it has, of course, powerful muscles, but no personality.” â€"Albert EinsteinThe problem is, when leaders say ‘personality’ they don’t understand what they’re referring to. Personality consists of a stable set of preferences and tendencies through which we approach the world. Being introverted or extroverted is an example of an important personality trait.P ersonality traits form at an early age and are fixed by early adulthood. Many important things about you change over the course of your lifetime, but your personality isn’t one of them.Personality is distinct from intellect (or IQ). The two don’t occur together in any meaningful way. Personality is also distinct from emotional intelligence (or EQ), and this is where the study, and most leaders for that matter, have misinterpreted the term. The qualities that leaders in the study called personality were actually emotional intelligence skills. And unlike your personality, which is set in stone, you can change and improve your EQ.Exceptional employees don’t possess God-given personality traits; they rely on simple, everyday EQ skills that anyone can incorporate into their repertoire.Leaders don’t need to go searching for these skills either (though it doesn’t hurt when you find them); their duty is to help everyone on their team harness these skills to become exceptional.Just consider some of the EQ skills that leaders and managers commonly mislabel as personality characteristics. These are the skills that set exceptional employees apart. They’re willing to delay gratificationOne thing an exceptional employee never says is, “That’s not in my job description.” Exceptional employees work outside the boundaries of job descriptions. They’re neither intimidated nor entitled; instead of expecting recognition or compensation to come first, they forge ahead in their work, confident that they’ll be rewarded later but unconcerned if they’re not. They can tolerate conflictWhile exceptional employees don’t seek conflict, they don’t run away from it either. They’re able to maintain their composure while presenting their positions calmly and logically. They’re able to withstand personal attacks in pursuit of the greater goal and never use that tactic themselves. They focusStudent pilots are often told, “When things start going wrong, don’t forge t to fly the plane.” Plane crashes have resulted from pilots concentrating so hard on identifying the problem that they flew the plane into the ground. Eastern Airlines Flight 401 is just one example: The flight crew was so concerned about the landing gear being down that they didn’t realize they were losing altitude until it was too late, despite alarms going off in the cockpit. Exceptional employees understand the principle of “Just fly the plane.” They don’t get distracted by cranky customers, interoffice squabbles, or switch to a different brand of coffee. They can differentiate between real problems and background noise; therefore, they stay focused on what matters. They’re judiciously courageousExceptional employees are willing to speak up when others are not, whether it’s to ask a difficult (or “embarrassingly” simple) question or to challenge an executive decision. However, that’s balanced with common sense and timing. They think before they speak and wise ly choose the best time and place to do so.They’re in control of their egosExceptional employees have egos. While that’s part of what drives them, they never give their egos more weight than what is deserved. They’re willing to admit when they’re wrong and willing to do things someone else’s way, whether it’s because the other way is better or it’s important to maintain team harmony. They’re never satisfiedExceptional employees have unparalleled convictions that things can always be better- and they’re right. No one is ever done growing, and there is no such thing as “good enough” when it comes to personal improvement. No matter how well things are going, exceptional employees are driven to improve, without forgetting to give themselves a healthy pat on the back. They recognize when things are broken and fix themWhether it’s a sticky desk drawer or an inefficient, wasteful process affecting the cash flow of the entire department, exceptional employees don’t w alk past problems. “Oh, it’s been that way forever,” simply isn’t in their vocabulary. They see problems as issues to be fixed immediately; it’s  that  simple. They’re accountableIf you’re a manager trying to decipher a bungled report, “It’s not my fault” is the most irritating phrase in the English language. Exceptional employees are accountable. They own their work, their decisions, and all of their results- good or bad. They bring their mistakes to management’s attention rather than hoping no one will find out. They understand that managers aren’t out to assign blame; they’re out to get things done. They’re marketable“Marketable” can mean many things. Inside the organization, it means “likeable.” Exceptional employees are well liked by co-workers. They have integrity and leadership skills (even if they’re not in an official leadership position) that people respond to. Externally, it means they can be trusted to represent the brand well. Manager s know they can send these employees out to meet with clients and prospects without worrying about what they’ll say or do.They neutralize toxic peopleDealing with difficult people is frustrating and exhausting for most. Exceptional employees control their interactions with toxic people by keeping their feelings in check. When they need to confront a toxic person, they approach the situation rationally. 2019 Star Spangled Accomplishment for Independence Day

2019 Star Spangled Accomplishment for Independence Day 2019 Star Spangled Accomplishment for Independence Day 2019 Star Spangled Accomplishment for Independence Day Happy Independence Day from The Resume Place! President, www.resume-place.comJuly 1, 2019Resume Place, inc. online forum and message board for discussion of issues in the field of resume writing, career development and federal employment. Introduction: Here at RP, we are constantly coaching our clients to write stories about their accomplishments to demonstrate KSAs from the job announcement. Personally, I am inspired by Francis Scott Keys experience, the flag, Ft. McHenry, our countrys survival, and the amazing poem that Mr. Key wrote, especially the phrase oer the land of the free, and the home of the brave. Can your spirits be raised to write a better federal resume by thinking about the morning that Francis Scott Key wrote the poem Defence of Ft. McHenry that became the National Anthem? Mr. Keys accomplishment would make a great KSA for Ability to Write! On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key was on a ship eight miles down the Patapsco River (near the Key Bridge today). He had been sitting out there watching the bombardment of the British on Ft. McHenry all day and through the night. By early morning, he looked out and the huge flag was still waving in the breeze after twenty-five hours of heavy bombardment by the British. Key, who sometimes wrote religious poetry, was inspired to pen the poem (in the graphic below) that became the National Anthem in 1931. The Commander of Ft. McHenry, Colonel Armistead knew how important Ft. McHenry was to our nation in 1812. The British had just burned Washington (including the White House and the Capitol Building) and were advancing toward Baltimore. The Commander felt that the Baltimoreans were discouraged and afraid for their city. He felt that they would have their spirits raised by seeing a huge, high flying flag at Fort McHenry as a symbol of defiance. The Defence of Fort McHenry, poem by Francis Scott Key, published in the Patriot on September 20, 1814. Colonel Armistead commissioned Mary Youngs Pickersgill, a local seamstress and flag maker to make two flags for Fort McHenry in 1813 a large flag and a smaller one to fly in bad weather. She was paid $500 for both flags, the large one being 30 x 42 feet, so it could be seen from a great distance. She was asked to sew a flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes, the number of states then in the Union. (My grandmother was a seamstress and flag maker with a famous flag maker in Baltimore City from 1910 until 1940. I wonder if this is the same flagmaker?) The 15-star, 15-stripe flag was authorized by the Flag Act of January 13, 1794, adding 2 stripes and 2 Stars. The regulation went into effect on May 1, 1795. This flag was the only U.S. Flag to have more than 13 stripes. It was immortalized by Francis Scott Key during the bombardment of Fort McHenry, Sept 13, 1814. The image above is representative of the actual flag that flew over Fort McHenry on that day and which is now preserved in the Smithsonian Museum. You can notice the tilt in some of the stars just as in the original Star Spangled Banner. Personally, I am inspired by Francis Scott Keys experience, the flag, Ft. McHenry, our countrys survival, and the amazing poem that Mr. Key wrote, especially the phrase oer the land of the free, and the home of the brave. Can your spirits be raised to write a better resume by thinking about the morning that Francis Scott Key wrote the poem Defence of Ft. McHenry that became the National Anthem? Mr. Keys accomplishment would make a great KSA for Ability to Write! Francis Scott Keys KSA Accomplishment, Sept. 14, 1814 Position: Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Congress KSA: Ability to Communicate in Writing AUTHORED THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER The actual banner that flew over Fort McHenry Context: As an attorney and aide-de-camp to General Smith, stationed near Upper Marlboro, MD, I found out my dear friend and elderly, Dr. Beane, who was captured by the British Army during a party at his home in Upper Marlboro. I was on a British vessel flagged for truce by the future President Jackson, on my way to pick up a captured friend in Marlborough. We got as far as the mouth of the Patuxent and then we were not permitted to return lest an intended attack on Baltimore by the British should be disclosed. We were brought up the Bay just across from Fort McHenry and there we were compelled to witness the bombardment of Fort McHenry, which the Admiral had boasted that he would carry in a few hours, and that the city must fall. Challenge: We watched the flag at the Fort through the whole day with more than 500 bombs from British ships to Ft. McHenry. In the night the smaller weather flag was flying while we watched the Bomb shells in darkness not knowing that the American Military had secretly planned 4 barges, which the British did not detect. These barges attached the British militia and sent them running, some with tugs assisting. At the early dawn our eyes were surprising greeted by the proudly the 15-star flag of our country (late to be known as the Star Spangled Banner). Actions: By morning, I was compelled to pen a poem that reflected my thoughts of the war and particularly of the flag, “Oh say can you see by the dawn’s early light … “ was my first thought. I wrote four verses that reflected topics about the day before and my vision of the flag in the morning. The first verse reviews the dawn’s light and the flag with broad stripes and bright stars that was still flying in the morning; the second verse reviews the dread silence and how the flag was fitfully blowing; the third verse reviews the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion; and the final and fourth verse celebrates the victory and peace that preserved our nation. Results: I witnessed the last enemy fire to fall on Fort McHenry and in this memory, I wrote the poem “Defence of Fort McHenry has been renamed to “The Star-Spangled Banner” and has become a well-known American patriotic song. The poem and song were recognized for official Navy use in 1931 and became the national them by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931 and signed by President Herbert Hoover.
